GRIZZLIES HANG ON FOR SERIES SWEEP OF OTTERS

Evansville, Ind. - The Gateway Grizzlies edged past the Evansville Otters on Thursday night, completing a series sweep with a 6-5 victory at Bosse Field.

After two scoreless innings, the Grizzlies roughed up Evansville starter Payton Baskette (2-1) in the third frame. Cody Livesay and Seth Heck started things with back-to-back singles. Brandon Thomas drove Livesay home for the game's first run with a single and his sixth RBI of the series.

Blake Brown stepped to the plate and laced a two-run single to make it 3-0. Tyler Tewell came around to score on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-0.

After tossing three scoreless innings, LHP Corey Kimes (1-2) allowed the Otters (19-12) to cut their deficit in half during the fourth. Jeff Gardner put Evansville on the board with a two-RBI double to make it 4-2. Kimes would pick up his first win of the season through five innings on the hill.

After the Otters manufactured a run in the fifth, the Grizzlies (13-18) scored a run against RHP Tyler Thompson in the seventh as Ben Waldrip hit a two-out RBI single to give Gateway a 5-3 advantage.

RHP JaVaun West entered for Gateway in the sixth and allowed a run in two innings of work. With the score 5-4 in the top half of the ninth, Tewell provided a huge insurance run by popping a solo homer to right field.

RHP Kevin Jefferis came in for the save opportunity in the bottom half of the inning and gave up a solo homer to Kaeo Aliviado to make it 6-5 with one out. Jefferis bounced back to retire the next two hitters and lock up a series sweep. It was Jefferis' second save of the series.

Tewell finished with a game-high three hits while Seth Heck also chipped in with a pair of singles.

The Grizzlies will try to make it four wins in a row as they open up a three-game set against the Florence Freedom on Friday night at GCS Ballpark. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs Friday on 1400 AM KJFF and online at www.GatewayGrizzlies.com/Radio. Sam Levitt and Matt Sabados call the action.
