Brennan Morgan is in his first year with the Grizzlies and his third as a professional in 2018. He played the last two seasons in the Los Angeles Angels’ system.
A 24th-round choice of the Angels in the 2016 MLB Draft out of Kennesaw State University, Morgan reached the Class-A Burlington Bees of the Midwest League a year ago — he slashed .230/.310/.317 (.627 OPS) with four home runs and 50 RBIs in 106 games.
Although he'll be a catcher with Gateway this season, Morgan played exclusively first base in 115 total games last year. He's only played 21 professional games as a catcher, all of which came in 2016 with the Rookie-Advanced Orem (Utah) Owlz. He posted .952 fielding percentage as a catcher — against a .987 career mark as a professional first baseman.
He played all four of his collegiate seasons at Kennesaw State (NCAA Div. I, Atlantic Sun Conference). In his senior year with the Owls, Morgan slashed a phenomenal .319/.443/.514 (.957 OPS) — he drove in 39 runs and struck out only 22 times (against 33 walks) in 44 games.
