GRIZZLIES EDGE AVIATORS; LEAD FRONTIER LEAGUE WEST
Loves Park, Ill. – Gateway Grizzlies starting pitcher Ja'Vaun West pitched seven strong innings and the Grizzlies held on for a 5-4 victory over the Rockford Aviators Wednesday night at Aviators Stadium.
The win was the Grizzlies' fifth in their last six games and assured them their fourth series win in four series this season. Gateway (8-3) is now 4-1 on the road and they lead the Frontier League West Division.
West (2-0) allowed just one run on five hits in a career-high seven innings. The right-hander from Atlanta, MO struck out five batters.
Rockford (1-10) took the first lead of the game in the fourth inning on a solo home run from St. Louis native and former Grizzlie, Evan Button.
The Grizzlies answered with two runs in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Vladimir Frias drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Antone DeJesus picked up his second RBI of the series on a single.
Rockford rallied in the ninth inning, scoring three runs, but Grizzlies reliever Zac Treece shut the door to pick up his first save of the season.
Flores, DeJesus and designated hitter Michael Pair all had multi-hit games for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies will look for their first series sweep of the season when they take on the Aviators Thursday night. Right-hander Chris Enourato (1-0) gets the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 at Aviators Stadium.
